There’s no debate: Forensics team is No. 6 in the world

The Cornell Forensics Society (CFS), ranked No. 6 in the world in college debate by the International Debate Education Association, has just finished its most successful season yet.

Orating ahead of such top powerhouses as Cambridge and Stanford universities, the debate team’s ranking was thanks to several tournament wins, including the prestigious Hart House Inter-Varsity Tournament at the University of Toronto. Yale University, at third, and Harvard University, at five, were the only U.S. universities ahead of Cornell in the world rankings.

For immediate release:

Cornell Qualifies for National Debate Tournament

Lauren Cue (A&S ’15) and Jason Wright (Eng ’12) qualified for the National Debate Tournament (NDT) in policy debate this past weekend at the Northeast Regional Championships held at Western Connecticut State University. To qualify, Cue and Wright had to defeat teams from Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, and other top teams. This will be the 4th year in a row that Cornell has qualified at least one team for the NDT. Prior to this, Cornell had only qualified three other teams dating back to the first NDT held in 1949. “This is a great win for the whole team, and represents the culmination of hard work all year long,” said Wright, who also qualified for the tournament last year.

Currently, the Cornell policy debate team is ranked 12th in the nation in the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) rankings.

Other Cornell students that did well at the tournament were Daniel Lee (A&S ’14) and Daniel Powers (ILR ’14) who made it to the finals of the junior varsity regional championships before falling to NYU, and Ryan Yeh (A&S ’13) and Alex Bores (ILR ’13) who made it to the finals of the world’s (British Parliamentary) style regional championships before falling to Hobart and William Smith.

Cornell’s world’s format team is ranked 5th internationally by the International Debate Education Association (IDEA).

Cornell Forensics Society Ranked 4th Best Debate Team in the World

In the International Debate Education Association’s (IDEA) rankings released today, the Cornell Forensics Society was ranked as the fourth best parliamentary debate team in the world, ahead of such traditional powerhouses as Oxford University, Cambridge University and Harvard University.

Cornell took one of the largest jumps of any of the top schools, rising from 46 last year to 4 this year. This continues a meteoric rise for the Forensics Society, which was ranked 212 at the start of 2008.

“I’m very happy that Cornell is being recognized as a strong and capable debate program,” said Leah Salgado ’12, President of the Cornell Forensics Society. “Without the strong leadership of [Coach] Sam Nelson, this would not have been possible.”

Cornell is ranked 4th behind the University of Sydney, Monash University, and Yale University. See the full rankings.

This year the Forensics Society has seen an unparalleled level of success, winning the James Madison Cup and the Harthouse International Invitational, as well as having two of the final four teams in the Yale International Invitational. Additionally, Cornell has had strong novice results, winning the Novice National Championship in April and the first three novice tournaments of this semester.

“Because our team is so young, we may still be able to climb forward next year,” said Alex Bores ’13. It has been exciting watching us get better every year.

Parliamentary debate is a format where teams of two debate issues surrounding current events. This year, Cornell will be sending four teams to the World Championships in Manila, Philippines. Those teams are Alex Bores and Ryan Yeh ’13, Daniel Blackman ’13 and Leah Salgado, Kirat Singh ’14 and Srinath Reddy ’14, and Jiali Li ’15 and Tarn Susumpow ’15.

Additionally, the National Champion Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar was ranked 241 in the World.

Cornell Wins Hart House Invitational

Hart House

Hart House @ University of Toronto

Ryan Yeh ’13 and Alex Bores ’13 won the Hart House Invitational Debate Tournament this past weekend at the University of Toronto. They bested 63 other teams to capture the Cornell Forensics Society first tournament win of the season in British Parliamentary Debate.

The Hart House IV is an international tournament that regularly attracts teams ranging from Alaska to Oxford. This year’s competition featured 64 teams of two. A number of competitors have achieved substantial international success, including debaters that competed in the semifinals of last year’s world championship. This was the first year that Cornell has won the tournament

At the end of the five preliminary rounds, Alex and Ryan were ranked third, earning a bye to the semifinals. After successfully opposing the motion “This house believes that the United States should not veto a Palestinian bid for statehood,” Alex and Ryan became the only American team to advance to the finals.

In the final round, Alex and Ryan debated the motion “This house believes that hactivism is a morally legitimate form of protest.” In arguing against the motion, they stressed the undemocratic nature of hacking and the right of institutions to control their own information.

By winning the tournament, Alex and Ryan have qualified for the International Debate Round Robin at Hobart William Smith this upcoming April. However, the Cornell Forensics Society will next focus its attention on the Yale Invitational Debate Tournament this weekend, hoping to duplicate its success.
